It’s How Much?

2010-07-24 10.01.19

On a recent trip into Manhattan, I stopped by Ess-a-Bagel and grabbed some breakfast. A plain bagel with lox, cream cheese, some tomato, and just an itty bit of onion. Sure I could have gone with something else, but it seemed indulgent.

I worked my way down the line and waited for the cashier to ring me up. I just ordered this one bagel, nothing more.

And it ended up costing over twelve dollars.

eek. seriously.

I’d be feeling better about it if it was a ginormous bagel overflowing with melt-in-your-mouth slices of lox, and enough onion and tomato to balance it out… and not reduce it to being just filler (not that the bagel I got did). That kind of bagel would justify shelling out twelve bucks.

Not that I’m saying this bagel is bad. It’s not bad. It’s good. It has to be good if I keep going back and continuously order the same thing. Perhaps I experience price amnesia in between visits.

What do you think? Do you think it’s crazy that it costs that much, or am I crazy for complaining about the cost?

a $12 bagel?! that's an insane amount of money for a snacky breakfast

Lox is always crazy expensive. Which is why when I choose to indulge, I make sure to order the bagel open faced.

It's like two lox bagels for the price of one. Then the cost is a bit more palatable.

Still, $12 is a lot.
