I’ve seen these all over Chinatown, but had no idea what exactly they were. [Info that follows in this paragraph came from Wikipedia] Turns out they’re dragon fruit, otherwise known as strawberry pear, huǒ lóng guǒ, and thanh long. It’s in the cactus family, the genus Hylocereus. Dragon fruit is low in calories, and high in antioxidants (not that you need an excuse to eat interesting things like this… right?).
This reminded me of a kiwi, both the consistency of the flesh and the taste. The red dragon fruit was sweet, but unlike kiwis, it did not leave an aftertaste… dry mouth type of feeling. The black specks are seeds, and they do a crunchy bursting thing as you chew. They’re sweet, fun to eat… if only I could have these all day.
This white flesh dragon fruit was smaller than its red colored counterpart, and not as sweet. I don’t know if it was due to being not ripe, or if the white fruit just isn’t sweet. I’m sure you can blend the fruit, mix with a simple syrup and throw in the freezer/ice cream maker for a really easy sorbet.
