New Shalimar Take Out Restaurant (Nanuet, NY)
Now that I no longer live in the area, my mom likes to let me know about the new restaurants opening up.
“Oh… you have to go to the new Indian restaurant. It’s a grocery store too, but they have a buffet! Your dad went there and got all this food for 6.99! Go buy lunch there today and get another so you have lunch for tomorrow…”

Karavalli Lunch Buffet (Nanuet, NY)
I recently met up with my friend S for a quick lunch. He really can’t go that far, so we’re limited to places in the Nanuet/Pearl River area. I originally wanted to check out the new Indian restaurant on Little Tor Road, but that’s New City and would cut into S’s eating time. He suggested Karavalli, which is just down the road.
I bet reading this makes you think of the Karavalli in Albany. Well guess what… they’re affiliated with one another, as indicated on their take out menus and the website.
The price of Karavalli’s lunch buffet is slightly more expensive than the lunch buffets I’m used to ($9.95 weekday lunch, $13.95 weekend brunch), but I suppose in exchange for a higher price is more variety in their dishes. If you can see in that picture up there, they had a noodle dish. Now I will readily admit I am not very knowledgeable in Indian cuisine, so I can’t say if that vermicelli dish is something you would commonly see. But it was new to me, so I tried it. Not bad, although it reminded me of Singapore noodles.
I wasn’t as hungry as I normally am when it comes to buffet, and only got up for more food two more times, just to try a little here and there. I hardly touched the naan, and what little I ate was tasteless and greasy.
I saved enough room for dessert. They had two offerings- milk dumplings and kheer. The kheer was okay, but it is pretty much rice pudding. The milk dumplings I’ve never seen before and I thought they were too sweet.
So far I haven’t found an Indian restaurant in Rockland County that appeals to me. It’s a shame, since I really do like Indian food. I think I’ll have to check out the new place over in New City. It’s in the space that used to be a Mexican restaurant. And just like the restaurant that preceded it, I have a feeling it’s not going to last.

Shalimar (Latham, NY)
Have you heard the story about the Shalimar's of the Capital Region? About how it's a chain, and not a chain? But it's still a family thing, although not immediate family. Both Steve Barnes and Bill Dowd have done the Shalimar breakdown, so there's really not much for me to comment on it... except there is no mention of the Shalimar in Troy and where it factors into all of this.
The Latham Shalimar is in the space that was once occupied by Afghan Grill, which from what I hear was sold. Shame, since I really wanted to try it out. I know there's at least two other Indian restaurants in Latham, but none that I can think of on that stretch of Rt. 7.
The interior seems a little cramped with all the tables, but somewhat sparse with the decorations. There are pictures that line one of the walls, and some decorative wall hangings, and all those lights! But still... it felt sparse.
I started with the Mulligatawny soup - made with lentils, tomato, lemon and spices. It was served with a lemon slice and cilantro, which is the first time that has ever happened. I crushed the lemon and it... I guess lightened the flavor? Lemoned the flavor? I'm not finding the right way to describe it, but it was good.
Lamb Palak - lamb meat cooked with spinach. I normally order Chicken Palak, but M pushed the lamb, claiming it would be more authentic that way. The meat was tender and the spinach was creamy. It's good with the rice that accompanies it, but even better with naan. Imagine they made burrito-like things with naan and any type of palak? Or even better... what if there were samosas filled with lamb palak? That would be an amazing appetizer!
Oh those tangents! I liked it. A little of it totally filled me up, but can you really complain about leftovers?
M went with the Mattar Paneer - green peas cooked with homemade cheese. In typical fashion, he inhaled his meal... I didn't get a chance to sneak a bite! It seems that this dish is commonly found on the lunch buffet menu, which is why he went with it. M also said something about it being the only non-meat item so... something something something.
If you are interested, they have a daily lunch buffet from 11:30 - 3:00. The sign along the road had it priced at $6.99, but I don't know if it's more on the weekends.
Our meal, which consisted of soup, two entrées, one order of naan, and one soda (with free refills) came out to 33 dollars, tax and tip included.

Feast of St. Anthony
The weather held up for the most part yesterday so this could go on. There were games and bouncy castles for the kids, music and dance for the adults, and food for them all. There was food representing the different ethnic groups that go to St. Anthony's.
This is some of the video that my dad took. There's a glimpse of me at some point, and you can hear me talking to him at the end. The best part is the conversation my dad has with one of the volunteers. It's in tagalog, so let me translate as best I can:
Guy - There's a line for the Filipino, but not the others
Dad - I know!
Guy - Why is that?
Dad - Our food tastes good.
I didn't get any Filipino food. I went and tried some Indian, Haitian, and Polish food. They were all very tasty, especially the Polish sauerkraut and kielbasa. So Good.

TMC Lunch
The spring semester wrapped up this week for many schools, including RPI. Because I don't know if they'll be serving at the Union during the summer, I headed over Friday afternoon for a quick lunch. I arrived about twenty minutes before closing, and was relived they didn't run out of anything.
I ordered the daily sampler, which included pakoras, thai red chicken curry, chick pea and potato curry, vegetable stirfry and basmati rice. You can't tell in the picture, but the top was covered in pakora. M had quite a few of them before I started in. We used the green sauce, I think it's some creamy spicy parlsey... thing. Either way it was delicious and what didn't get eaten with the pakoras was mixed in with the chicken. It was creamy, spicy, and totally hit the spot. Unfortunately, it was a tad spicy.
And how did I deal with the heat? By eating some of TMC's homemade banana peanut butter chip ice cream. It wasn't bad- not too sweet, and there were little bits of banana along with the peanut butter chips. Sadly, it was not creamy as I had expected. It was full of crystals, which M says is due to their using water and not cream. M ended up eating the chocolate wafer cookie that came with the ice cream.

House Hunting
This has been the second weekend that M and I have been looking for houses. We've seen nice ones, and not-so-nice ones. Big ones and small ones. Driveway with ample parking to the wretched parking on the street. Heck, we even saw a former funeral home (it was falling apart).
Saturday was a short day as our Realtor needed to leave early for open houses. But we saw two we really liked, and hoped that they wouldn't get snatched up before we had a chance at it. We were back in Troy after noon and I suggested to check out the farmers market. I was hoping Thunder Mountain Curry was there... but alas, it wasn't. And it looked like in their absence the First Caribbean table was making a killing. New to the market (or just new to me) was the Mexican stand. I have no idea what they were offering, but I saw plenty of paper food contains with corn husks. I was intrigued but M would not have any of it. After one lap of the market, we walked down the street to grab some lunch buffet at Shalimar. The Saturday buffet has not cone up to $7.99, which still isn't too bad.

Indian Lunch Buffet
I drove up Sunday to spend the last of my vacation with M. We went to Macaroni Grill for our anniversary dinner (our first sorta date was there)and enjoyed a night of drinking and Wii playing. The snow really put a damper on heading back out, but a good night in is always appreciated.
Both M and I have been craving Indian food. The last time we had some Indian lunch buffet was back in the summer, so I think it's safe to say we were due for some. I am well aware of other Indian restaurants that are better (the names escape me, but I think it has been mentioned in my comments somewhere) but Shalimar is here in Troy and close to M's apartment.
The price isn't bad ($6.99) and the vegetarian dishes seem to always outnumber the ones that include meat, so it should be no surprise that M eats more than I do when we're there. The chicken biryani was on the bland side, with the chicken sadly lacking any flavor. The chicken tikka masala had a very strong buttery flavor. More buttery than normal, so the rich, creamy taste was strange. Best dish of the meal was the daal palak. You really can't go wrong with lentils and spinach.

Bombay Grill (Latham, NY)
I don't think there is an Indian restaurant in the Capitol Region that M and I haven't tried yet. It's getting to be as bad as Japanese restaurants around here... it isn't yet, but it's getting there.
The Bombay Grill is in Latham across the street from Bella Napoli. I think that's the intersection of 155 and 9? Anyways, the place used to be a Japanese restaurant that I'd been trying to go to (even though it's been closed for years).
You can see the remains of the Japanese restaurant on the exterior windows and some of the fixtures inside. The dining area is open for the most part, with the section that's partitioned off the designated buffet area. I just love Indian lunch buffets. I'm still undecided, but I may come back just to check their buffet out.
Our waitress filled our water glasses and promptly served poppadums with dipping sauces. It's kind of neat that they fried it like that, but only one per person? I guess they think we'll be ordering a lot. Because of M's stubbornness, we ordered the plain Naan, but meat or not, it wasn't bad. I liked how it's poofy, other places it's flat and boring. It's cut in half, but it was the size of our dinner plate. Niiiice.
I ordered the Chicken Tikka Biryani, extra spicy. Ohmyfreakinggoodness, this stuff was good. Pretty darn good. And unlike other places, I didn't have to worry about biting into a bay leaf or clove. It was served with raita, which I normally don't get when I order Biryani elsewhere, but only learned that you're supposed to add it to the dish when one of my co-workers brought it in for a party. A trip to the Bombay Market is in order, ASAP.
M ordered the Mattar Paneer, which is peas and cheese in a spicy tomato based sauce. I didn't try any of it, but M said that it reminded him of one of the pre-made Indian dinners he has in his kitchen. I'll take that as a "good, but not really."
