Kohlrabi

I’ve been trying my best to use up my vegetables, but there were some that fell through the cracks. Kohlrabi was one of the unfortunate victims. It was sitting there with the rest of the veggies, but I didn’t know what to make and so they stayed… unloved… forgotten.

When I remembered them, they had started to grow – shoots and what looked like the beginnings of flower buds. So what to do – toss them? Cook them? Or how about plant them? I’ve seen on Pinterest people posting about re-growing vegetables, and this would be the same thing… right? I just don’t know if I’ll actually get kohlrabi from one. It’ll be interesting to find out.

Garlic!

Back in the fall I picked up a few bulbs of garlic at Honest Weight for a spring harvest.  Well, the snow is finally gone and here come the welcoming green shoots. How long before I can pull them out of the ground? I’m sure it’ll be another month at least.

I’m still waiting for the rhubarb. When we put in the raised beds last year, we filled it with a lot of dirt, and the rhubarb was pretty deep in there. M thinks he may have killed it… which would be sad. But then again, we really haven’t done much with it. I think I’d rather put in asparagus.

Thin Eats

So far garden 2.0 has been going well. I have some seeds in peat pots, and seeds in the ground. And they have been growing! And really well, I might add. They’ve grown enough that I needed to start thinning out the beds. The books I’ve been reading say that you should eat the thinnings, thereby not wasting anything. These are young radish plants. Threw them in with some spring mix for lunch.

Lunch on the Patio

Now that we have the garden just about the way we want it, it's about time we started enjoying it. So we had lunch outside on Saturday, before the skies darkened and delivered some much needed rain.

Lunch was simple - arugula salad, vegetable soup, and rolls we toasted before eating. M had his cooler of beer and I stayed strictly non-alcoholic. You don't see it, but there is a lot of space on that table. Plenty of space for a few more people.

Head Start

Didn’t know rhubarb is a perennial. I’m pretty excited to watch this one grow, since it’s new to me. And if you grow rhubarb, you know what’s also going to be around…

Strawberries! No clue what type, but it seems to have taken over about a third of the vegetable garden. Strawberry rhubarb hand pies, anyone?

Chives! At least I think they are. When the snow finally disappeared, these appeared out of nowhere. Who knows… perhaps they were there all along, waiting for its day in the sun. Well, you’ve got it buddy.

Ipod Issues & A Rung Along the Hudson

It isn't a problem with all the songs on my Nano, but quite a few of them get skipped... a second or two into the song. I don't think the files are corrupted, because I have the same songs on my Dell DJ and there are no problems there.
