They're That Good

I stopped into Shoprite early one morning to get some breakfast for house guests. Bought bagels and cream cheese, some fruit, and donuts.

But not just any donuts. Rockland bakery donuts! I always thought Shoprites made them in-house, but I guess the Albany location isn't. Not that I'm really complaining - but they might be on the stale side after a two hour ride. Wouldn't Bella Napoli have been a more likely option? They are local.

Shoprite's Can Can Sale!

There comes a time in every Shopriter when you say to yourself, "Self... shouldn't there be a can can sale going on now?" Well friends, that time is now. It started on Thursday and runs until the 19th. 

But enough from me for now. Let's get to that press release, shall we?

SHOPRITE KICKS-OFF FAMOUS CAN CAN SALE

January 2, 2013 (Florida, NY) – ShopRite’s famous annual Can Can Sale, begins Thursday, January 3rd and will run through Saturday, January 19th. This year marks the legendary sale’s forty-second anniversary.

The Can Can sale, made famous by low prices and those iconic Can Can dancers, continues to have a loyal and devoted following among ShopRite customers who eagerly await this annual event.  Over the years, the Can Can Sale has changed and grown.  Originally intended to focus solely on ShopRite Private Label products, today many national brands are included, as well. In fact, Can Can proved so popular that in 2002, ShopRite introduced a Summer Can Can Sale.

Although there are no sales figures available from the early days of ShopRite’s Can Can, the company estimates it has sold more than 3 billion cans over the sale’s 42 year history.

If you're curious what I'll be buying, it will be a few cases of Tuttorusso tomatoes (12 for $6.88), a couple cans of green beans and corn for snacking (33 cents each), and maybe Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna (88 cents).

·         Christmas Eve – All stores are open until 7:00 PM. All pharmacies are open until 6:00 PM.

 ·         New Year’s Eve – All stores are open until 10:00 PM. All pharmacies are open until 6:00 PM.
 ·         New Year’s Day – All stores are open regular hours. All pharmacies are closed.

Quick Mention: Slingerlands Shoprite Opens Today

Sadly I’ve got a busy day ahead otherwise I would haul myself over there and check it out. This is the third Shoprite to open up in the area, with a few more slated for the year. Say what you will about the market invasion, but I like having more options when it comes to my grocery shopping.
Now if only they would open up a store in Troy…

I've only seen these kind of hand dryers in other other place - Minado. Color me impressed.

Coupon Clipping

This is nowhere near that extreme couponing, but whatever I can do to help trim that grocery bill. M has pointed out that none of the supermarkets in the Capital Region do double coupons [Edit: Price Chopper has since started to double coupons up to $.99 due, apparently, to the news that ShopRite that will be coming our way.]. The nearest Price Chopper that does is in Bennington. Hannaford from what I can tell doesn’t double, but will take competitors coupons and internet coupons, with certain restrictions.  No clue about Walmart, but I really try not to get groceries from there. Shoprite (which will soon be in Niskayuna!!) will double coupons, but I don’t know if they’ll keep it once they’re here.
I don’t know if coupons are really worth it – a majority of the coupons were for items I don’t even want. And the way it looks, you have to buy a lot to make it worthwhile (I could be wrong with that, but that’s what it looks like).
Meh… I’ll still give it a go and see how it pans out. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be to remember to bring my coupons when I go to the store.

Market Saturation

There’s going to be a new supermarket in town! The  Times Union is reporting that Shoprite is coming back to the Capital Region. The owners of the OTB Teletheater are planning on tearing down the old building to make way for a brand new, super duper Teletheater, and enough space for a supermarket. If you’re not familiar where the OTB is located, it sits along Central Avenue, down the road from a Hannaford and Price Chopper.

I don’t know about this. On one hand, I’m happy- I never dug the whole the food shopping situation in the CR, because being a downstater, it never compared to the stores back home (Shoprite/Pathmark/A&P to some extent). The choice of location seems questionable, and I can only imagine how much more headache inducing the traffic in that area will become.

So what do you think? A welcome addition? Would you rather another store come in instead?

A Surprise Find

I stopped by Kim's Oriental Market yesterday to pick up a couple bags of kimchi (trust me, it will be gone in a week) and I saw this in the freezer. I probably wouldn't have noticed if it weren't for that all too familar Shoprite logo.

As you can see, this is the current logo. The one on the box is the older one, and I have not seen it in a while, which makes me think: just how old is this calamari?
