Under the Copper Tree Presents: Recipe Calculator Manager Thing v1.0

Hi.

So R's been busy with some things.. work, classes, baking... mostly baking. And so to help her out with her recipes, (keeping them organized, calculating weights, approximating costs, etc.,) I've come up with a nifty Excel spreadsheet. It allows her to enter any recipe in more or less any measure, recalculates and converts to US and metric units, scales for batch size, and semi-automatically calculates costs, ("semi" meaning you still may need to enter in a few price details if it's not already included in the list I have set up). This is still far from perfect, but it works for our needs, even if we still have to fudge some information around.

I've tried to make this as easy to use as possible, but I'm pretty sure it's still going to give some folks a headache. Being such, I've locked the worksheets to prevent any accidental additions, deletions, or general tomfoolery. If you'd like to unlock and add your own customized additions, just send an email to underthecoppertree@gmail.com and we'll gladly oblige. Also, this is a macro-enabled worksheet that uses Visual Basic scripting, so you'll need to enable content and macros to be able to easily add recipes. I promise there's no malicious software or coding that's included, and I won't be able to peer through your webcam and see what's happening in the privacy of your living room.. (P.S. Dan, put a shirt on.)

Fields that you can select you can edit. This includes the 'Recipe Name', 'Ingredients', measurements (except for calculated measurements), instruction areas, batch size, yield, and 'Ingredient List'. If an ingredient is added that is found in the 'Ingredient List', pricing information is automatically calculated and scaled to the amount called for in the recipe. Price of ingredient used will automatically appear to the left of the name, and the total cost of the recipe will be updated. If an ingredient is not found in the 'Ingredient List', you can enter or update the information as required. Names must match exactly (ie. "egg" is not equal to "eggs"), though you can create multiple entries to account for this. Cost will be calculated using the calculated measurements, so it won't matter if you buy N oz of a certain ingredient but need X cups -- it will give you a price regardless. Since '#' is not a quantifiable unit of measure, a value for '#' will need to be entered in the 'Ingredient List' to calculate cost per item.

To add a recipe, simply click the Add button. This will copy your recipe to a new worksheet, named via the 'Recipe Name' field. Be careful though, this new recipe will be shown in the newly focused window. You will need to click on the "Add New Recipe" tab again, (which will still be populated with the recipe you just added), and hit the Reset button to clear the fields and ready the worksheet for another new recipe. .. Like I said, this is a work in progress.

Anyway, if you'd like to try it out you can download it from here. I'd love your input, questions, comments, suggestions, large sums of money, etc. Leave a comment or email underthecoppertree@gmail.com.

Cupcake Decorating Class at the Library

Last night the Lansingburgh library branch had their cupcake decorating class. If you looked at the page last week, you would have seen that I attended the cooking decorating class. Loads of fun, and a reality check that my decorating skills are... abysmal.

troof.

Anyways, I got to the class a bit late, but I don't think I missed too much. Becky did a quick demonstration of some ways to decorate in the Halloween theme. She did the spider web pattern, which didn't work too well... probably because the icing was thicker. There was also a ghost (which I didn't make), and a mummy. I think I overheard her say seventeen people had signed up for the class, but only seven people showed up. Maybe it was too cold for them? Oh well... more cupcakes for those of us that made it!

It's very possible there may be another class for the holiday season. And if so, I'll definitely be signing up.

How Papa John's Does Square

Before I go any further, let me say my involvement with this pizza was picking it up and having a slice or two while making my own dinner. Any exasperated reactions please direct to M.

So last weekend Papa John's had a contest to pick which side won on the coin toss. If you guessed correctly, you won a free pizza. At M's urging, I went and voted. Once. M voted much more than that... and won't tell me how many exactly. Anyways, he guessed right on a bunch of them... so free pizza for us.

yay...

M called me after volunteering and asked me to help him order our free pizza. Which topping? Mushroom. Regular or crispy crust? Regular. Extra sauce or no sauce? Are you kidding? Regular cut or square? Hmmm... square I guess.

Picked up the pizza and endured an extremely warm ride back home (gotta keep that pizza warm). Opened up the box and that is what we saw - a round pizza cut into a bunch of small slices. Square slices. Not what I expected... I thought it would be a square pie, something new PPJs was trying out. A nod to the local pizza style if you will.

That is what I get for expecting too much out of them. Dreams dashed, a hard cold reality slap in the face.

And the garlic dipping sauce didn't melt. Boo.

Perks of the Job

Working across the street this week, and I was bummed because it's supposed to be free food galore at work. But when I took a quick look at the board this morning, I saw scribbled at the bottom "LUNCH TODAY PROVIDED BY ____________"

Free food? Begin happy dance!

I wasn't expecting much. Pizza seems to be the standard when it comes to free hospital lunches - it's cheap and can feed lots of people.

But we got Panera sandwiches, chips, drinks, and from what I heard, some cookies. By the time I got out of my room the selection was rather limited - so I went with the Mediterranean Veggie. Can't say I've ever had it before, but it was actually pretty good. Slightly soggy, and normally I hate soggy sandwiches... but it was paid for so whatevs.

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day

Had a scoop of Late Night Crunch - "Vanilla bean ice cream with a salty caramel swirl & fudge covered potato chip clusters." Not bad, but not my favorite. It tasted minty, but it could have been some leftover mint chocolate ice cream on the scoop. Line was quick, so that was a plus. Met Albany Jane & John there, who had strawberry cheesecake and blueberry something.

So now I wait for the free iced coffees from Dunkin Donuts. Comes quick, because I'm thirsty.

Solderless PMT Probe

Directions:
- Add Probe to 5
- Remove straight wired connection from 6 and replace with toggle switch

Items Needed:
Stock DVD Drive Power Cable (or buy one here for $2.40 shipped)
Switch and wires from old computer build; front panel (or buy some wires here for $3.60, without the
switch. Radioshack should have a decent switch available.)
Power Switch with attached wires and connectors (removed from plastic housing)
Wire from front panel peripherals (x2; one side of one wire stripped)
Leg of infrared LED (or any small, electrically sound, metal object to use as a probe. A pin or needle would
        work as well)

Tools Needed:
Small flathead screwdriver or thin metal pry bar
   Electrical tape (just in case)

Completely solderless DIY Pogo Mo Thoin Probe.

I made one out of old parts, and it worked a million times better than cutting traces and soldering the PCB (MRA Hack). I'm going to order an extra cable from DealExtreme ($2.40, free shipping takes about a month to arrive) to make a permanent (ie. extra, soldered) version I can use to swap out and update firmware. The switch will be especially handy when updating, letting you power on/off the drive as needed.

I started out by disconnecting the [5] and [6] wires from the plug. The easiest way to do this (just like disconnecting the plastic housing on your front panel wires) is to pry up the small flap of plastic above the wire and pull it out. For the [5] wire, I used a long piece of wire for the front panel speaker, with metal connectors still attached. These connectors fit perfectly into the DVD power cord plug. I jammed the 'probe' (the LED leg) into this connector as well as the spliced end of another length of wire (with the connector also attached at the other end), creating a very snug fit with very little wiggle for the probe. Insert the opposite ends of your new probe wire into the [5] slots. The same was done with the [6] wire. It was removed and replaced with the power button switch. I checked all connections and the switch with a multimeter and recommend you do the same.

Update (3/10/12):

After receiving my extra DVD power cable, I went ahead and made an improved, soldered, easier to use, permanent version of this probe. The steps were exactly the same as above, but I soldered on a toggle switch from an old flash bulb, along with a green LED indicator light so I can tell whether the probe is on or off. I used a cardboard spool from some old thermal paper I found at work for the body, and closed everything up with some epoxy putty on either end. Here's my end result..

Free Carvel Ice Cream

IMG_0144

I was doing some coupon clipping when I came across this ad. Free ice cream? I’m in. And the best part? It was Thursday!  So after sending a message to my friends about the freeness, I jumped in my car and drove to the nearest Carvel. I even contemplated doing an ice cream run, hitting up the three Carvels  in my area.
But first, I had to try out this ice cream.

IMG_20100923_184852

It looks like Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate ice cream is their new flavor. The free sample is a kid scoop size, I think I read somewhere 3 0z. That’s more than enough for ice cream I’ve never had before. I don’t know if it’s clear or not, but it’s chocolate with marshmallow creme/fluff/something throughout.

I’ve got to hand it to Carvel, it does indeed taste exactly like Swiss Miss hot chocolate… right down to the powdery aftertaste. Might be better in a milk shake.

CiCi’s Pizza – Free Meal Month #1

2010-07-30 21.07.39

We stood on line long enough for the card, might as well use it… right? We didn’t have to wait on line to get in like last time, but the place was packed. People were still stacking their plates sky high with food, even though it is a buffet.

I had one slice of cheese pizza and a whole lot of dessert. I got some salad, only to find out there were no more forks. Luckily I grabbed a spoon before they were gone.

CiCi’s Pizza (Colonie, NY)

2010-07-18 16.12.24

Today was the official opening of Cici’s Pizza in Colonie. I wouldn’t have known about it had I not looked at Steve Barnes’ Table Hopping blog and his brief mention of it.

One free pizza buffet a month for a whole year to the first hundred people to show up at their grand opening? Okay, I’m game. M too.

2010-07-19 10.27.03

We made it over to Wolf Road just after 10:30, thinking that half an hour before opening wouldn’t be too early, and hopefully the line wouldn’t be impossible (the line we saw the day before  wasn’t too bad… and that was the pre-opening opening). And we were right- no crazy crowds, just order and what could only be some very tired people. By the time we joined, the line had reached the entrance to Outback Steakhouse.

2010-07-19 11.29.26

I’m not sure when the first person on line got there, but it was pretty early. A woman ahead of us told M and I that her daughter got there at six in the morning so she could be one of the first to get in. Sounds crazy, but eh… it’s summer Gives you something to do, and a story to tell when you’re older.

People at the front of the line made their wait as comfortable as possible by bringing folding chairs and blankets. Many of the groups waiting to enter were families with young children (from the looks of it, the demographic CiCi’s may be aiming for).

2010-07-19 10.27.27cici2

If you were one of the first hundred, you were given a “token” as seen on the left. As you walked in, you handed your “token” to the owner, who in return handed over the free meal card.

Inside was bright, cheery, and very chain-like. After entering you are steered straight to the register where they do their hellos and explain how the buffet works. The $4.99 covers just the food, and it’s another $1.6(5/9) for a regular sized drink. Throw in another .75 cents and you get a large take out cup (which has some tab thing where you can win more free stuff).

cici

I figured I’d whip up a layout of the place so you get a better idea of what’s going on. This could be their generic layout for all I know, but it’s very different from most buffets.

2010-07-19 12.02.17

Salad Bar – There were two options available, although they looked exactly alike. Both were iceberg mixes, one just looked shinier than the other (pre-dressed salad I guess). There were some chopped vegetables you could add to your salad, and a few different types of dressing. I especially liked the large slices of mushrooms. No skimping out there.

2010-07-19 11.54.02 2010-07-19 12.02.11 2010-07-19 12.14.05

Soup/Pasta/Garlic Bread – Both the soup and pasta tasted like they came from a can. I didn’t try the pasta, but M said it reminded him of Chef Boyardee. Funny, because the soup almost instantly made me think of Campbell’s soup. Little salty, little sweet, but good enough. Did not necessarily like the bits of “chicken.” As for the garlic bread… I might be rushing judgment here, but don’t eat it. I tried to look up the ingredients for what they put on it, but it’s nowhere to be found on their website. The garlic bread is one of their zero trans fat items, so I’m pretty sure it’s chock full of artificial ingredients. A good thing to know is that the marinara sauce they will offer you to accompany the garlic bread will absolutely cover that chemical taste.

2010-07-19 12.07.33  2010-07-19 12.09.27

Pizza – The customers at the opening today seemed to like the pasta topped pizzas. I didn’t have any, but I saw quite a few people going for the macaroni & cheese pizza. And for a second I swore I saw a Hamburger Helper topped pizza, but it was probably the Italian style sausage or beef pizzas. I helped myself to the Pepperoni flip, regular pepperoni, and thin crust Italiano. The pepperoni pizza was okay, but the dough was a little chewy. The thin crust was not as crisp as I thought it would be, and it was a tad too salty (but corrected with a dip in that tomato sauce). The flip I did not like at all- it was salty and oddly runny. I don’t know if that was from the oil that cooked out of the pepperoni or the cheese they used. But like the Italiano, a dunk in that tomato sauce made it much more tolerable.

2010-07-19 12.13.52 2010-07-19 12.02.27 2010-07-19 12.15.54

Dessert – The apple pizza and the cinnamon rolls were pretty good. I’d actually consider ordering a whole apple pizza pie.

Lunch for two was just under 15 bucks. Not too bad, considering what I ate wasn’t the greatest stuff. Will I be going here often? No, but I will stop by at least once a month. And the prices on their take out pizzas (I think I saw $4.99 for a medium and $5.99 for a large 1-topping) are very budget friendly. We’ll see if M and I ever check it out.

Free Burrito? Fail.

You may have heard, but today is the official opening of the Chipotle in Clifton Park. To celebrate this opening, they opened yesterday and gave out free burritos. I am all about free things, and if I were in the area, I would be all up in that business. M had the day off so I insisted that he get his butt up there and indulge in the free.

He called up a friend and they made their way up to Clifton Park. Upon arrival however, his friend L saw the line that reached out the door and around the building, and decided she'd rather not wait outside for a FREE BURRITO. .. M needs to choose his friends more carefully.

(this is what I get for asking him to write)

Anyways, the line was long... but really, how long would that wait have been? So L balked at the line and they went to the Latham Chipotle, where they also encountered a long line (out the door, or to the door, past the door, whatever). Not as long as the CP line, but still long.

School Perks

School: Thank you Student R for spending thousands of dollars on our school. As a token of appreciation, ice cream is on us!

Me: Gee... thanks.

My school had a free ice cream day at Cold Stone. I normally get berry berry good, but I went crazy and got the birthday cake remix thing. It was good 2/3 of the way and then I of course began to get queasy with the sugar overload.

Sorry ice cream. I didn't want to throw you out, but you were going to make me throw up.
