M and I hit up Graney’s last night for some double date action. While waiting for the other couple to show up, I spotted this out. Why did they specifically mention that the chips they used were Tostitos? I wonder if there has been an increase in nacho sales because of its being used. I’ve seen their nachos, and it’s pretty sad.

I've had the Inauguration coverage on in the background most of the morning. I have still yet check the site, but I have been looking around for what they are eating for lunch today.
EDIT: Here is the official Inauguration website. The recipes are in .pdf format.
Chiff.com has the menu listed, and it has links to the recipes. It also lists the caterers used for the luncheon and some other background information.

The Long Journey to Lunch **MENU ADDED** Redwood Diner (Schenectady, NY)
Sadly, I cannot be one of those people who can just jump in the car and find a place to eat. I found myself in a situation where I was starving and M's kitchen was devoid of anything that seemed appealing. Amazingly, M was as hungry as I, and off we went to find lunch.
Originally I wanted to check out Marisa's Place in Guilderland. Unfortunately, it was not where I thought it was (I passed it by one strip mall) so instead of turning around I insisted to keep driving on and we would find something.
Two things to keep in mind *especially here in the Capital Region*
1. Many places are closed on Mondays.
2. It is not unusual for places to close by 3PM
At this point I was in full hangry mode.
Somehow, we made our way to Schenectady and finally, finally, (finally!) we came across the Redwood Diner. The food gods directed us to a place that was open. I really like their sign. Very old school, and makes me think of a bowling alley. The parking around the building was not clearly marked, so watch out if you go... you may be parking in a handicap spot.
The menu is decent enough, with plenty of specials. I ordered the fish sandwich special and a cup of chili. M chose a breakfast platter of scrambled eggs, home fries, and rye toast.
The chili was good, with plenty of meat and beans. I spied a couple of people at the lunch counter eating chili dogs and wished I had ordered that instead of fish. If I only knew...
... that the fish fry would not be good. It was bland. There is not enough tartar or cocktail sauce in the world to fix the blandness of this fish. Whatever happened to seasoning? And the hot dog roll? Are they not even trying? I gave up all attempts to eat this as a sandwich and did my best to finish. It does have one thing going for it- the fish was very moist.
Either M was very hungry, or the food was really good. His plate was empty not too long after the picture was taken. I do remember him saying that the home fries were better than most, but what is this? Rye toast is extra? Is there a rye shortage out there?
Lunch for two came out to $21.00 (including tip).

Kooky For Kabuki? **MENU ADDED** (Latham, NY)
After buying a ton of kimchi from Kim's and eating plenty of it at Kobe, I was still craving something Korean. I've passed by Kabuki a couple of times, but never got around to actually eating there, until tonight. The Korean I've had so far in the CR has been alright, but I was still hoping there would be one place that would just wow me.
After some googling, I discovered that Kabuki used to be out in Clifton Park, and recently moved to the Peter Harris Plaza. As you're turning into the plaza, it's on the far left side. I never see cars on this side of the Plaza, and when M and I went in for dinner it was empty (but then again, it was a little after 8 on a Sunday night).
As you can see, the restaurant is one open space with tables on both sides of the room. The sushi bar is one of the first things you see when you walk in, along with the specials written on a dry erase board hanging behind the bar. Seating seems sparse, but understandable if they're waiting for the approval of hibachi tables.
We were served hot tea immediately after being seated and after a quick glance at the menu, I decided on the Dolsot Bibimbap and a salmon skin roll. M, as usual, ordered the Tofu teriyaki. Both meals came with miso soup and salad, and were pretty average. At least the iceberg lettuce wasn't wet before they plopped the dressing on.
My salmon skin roll came out next. This was fantastic, one of the best I've had up here. I also like how they don't serve a huge mound of pickled ginger and wasabi. It's so wasteful.
The difference between regular bibimbap and the dolsot is the bowl it is served in. The dolsot came in an extremely hot stone pot. I let my food sizzle before I broke into it, allowing the rice to crisp on the bottom and turn into happy yummy crunchiness.
One thing I completely forgot about was the egg. I am not a fan of eggs for the most part, and really not a fan if the eggs are runny. But my fault, right? So I just mixed it as fast as possible so that the egg could cook more. It was good, but left much to be desired. Maybe bibimbap just isn't the dish for me. And once again, the pepper sauce wasn't hot enough for me.
According to M, his dinner was passable. Unlike Okinawa, which gives their tofu a coating before stir frying (a method which M thinks is perfect), it seems as if Kabuki half assed the tofu teriyaki. In M's words "they cup up some firm tofu, warmed it up, and doused it in hot teriyaki sauce." He thought the noodles (you're supposed to get the option between rice or noodles, the server didn't even ask) were alright, but the tofu was bad.

I think from now on, I'll leave the bimbahp for cooking at home. There were other items on the menu that I would like to try again, but I'll have to go with someone else other than M.Kabuaki Sushi & Teriyaki

Supper Club (12/30): Kumo **MENU ADDED** (Pearl River, NY)
We had our last Supper Club of the year at Pearl River's newest restaurant (thanks for the pick, Brett Z!). If you're familiar with PR, it's across the street from the train station and Defiant brewery. The opening of Kumo brings the number of Japanese restaurants in Pearl River up to three now, and they are all pretty close to one another.
What sets it apart is the decor. You don't even need to open the front doors to see that this restaurant was designed with a very urban feel. The dining area is one room that is broken up with a partial wall. The bar begins right at the door, with the sushi bar at the back. The walls are tiled with some rather interesting glass tiles, and then there are the four light pillars. Dim, yet bright... definitely has that city vibe. Kumo stands out in this town, and it isn't keeping the people away.
We planned to meet up for dinner at 8pm and I was the first person there. The place was packed. I also found out that nobody had called ahead to reserve a table for a party of six. Lesson learned. We ended up waiting for about fifteen minutes before they could set something up. A table opened up, and I thought it would be ours, but someone in our group must have agreed to something, because we ended up sitting by the sushi bar in two different groups (two at the bar, four at a table). Annoying, but at least we were seated.
I wanted to get something light, so I ordered the grilled squid and the Sansai soba. The squid was tender and not at all rubbery. I don't know what was used for a sauce, maybe terriyaki sauce? It was a bit on the sweet side. I was a third of the way done with my squid when my soup came out. The soup was alright for what it was, soba soup with vegetables. The noodles were a bit weird, I was expecting the buckwheat noodles I usually get when I order soba, but these looked like ramen noodles. They were a bit mushy. I was going to try the Tahitian Vanilla creme brulee, but I went with the fried green ice cream instead. My dinner, with tax and tip came out to $29.00. I gave a little bit more tip, because my wine was on the house. Yay!
The pictures below are the rest of the dinners at the table, all of which looked fantastic. My friend E said that their lunch menu is good, so I think that will be my next visit.
