The Best Part of Easter

Big Announcement #1

As of next week, I’ll be an upstater once again.

That’s right readers. I’m moving back to the Capital Region. I got a job offer not too long ago and with all the paperwork done, I can get back into the work routine (and I’m loving the fact I’ll be working days and no weekends!)

I’ve got a long list of places I need to try out, and no longer have to say “well, next time I’m in the area.” I celebrated with some cupcakes from The Fresh Market, chocolate with pink icing, purple tinted sugar… and red hots? Weird combination, but that’s what drew me to them in the first place. The candy really didn’t jive with the cupcake, so I ended up picking them off and eating them later.

There’s another announcement, but that one isn’t ready yet. Give it a month.

Big League Chew

This really brings me back to my childhood. I’d buy this from the country store, along with a pack of Nerds, a bag of chips, and a Cherry Coke (I was indeed a junk food kid) before heading over to the playground or the bowling alley. This was the only gum I would chew during t-ball/coach pitch/little league games… because BLC was the gum to chew when you were playing baseball.

I have a lot to catch up on (being cooped up in a room for hours on end studying can make you a wee bit crazy), but in the meantime enjoy some of these food related Hello Kitty items I found this weekend.

Picture above I found at International. According to the sales sticker, this large tin contains milk candy. I wonder if it really was candy… since it was stocked with cookies and crackers.

Icing decorations! I found these at AC Moore. FYI: I think their Moonlight Madness sale is on the 12th.

And what would go well with edible Hello Kitty decorations?

 

How about a not-so-edible-yet-tasty-looking birthday candle? Also found at AC Moore. That store really has not been one to disappoint with their Sanrio merchandise… although they may have toned it down a bit. What about Keroppi? And that penguin?

Why do kids always get the cool stuff?!? Yes, I want classy dishware. But I also want to be entertained! A cat face on a dish? Entertaining. Some floral trim? Not entertaining. Sold at Target.

Skittles!

How do they decide how much of each color goes into every package? Instead of gobbling it all up like I normally do, I went ahead and did a count. Here are the results:

Red - 15
Yellow - 13
Orange - 13
Green - 9
Purple - 8

Atlantic City!

The same weekend my classmate held her graduation party (which must have been two weeks ago), Mags, M and I took a bus ride down to Atlantic City. It was one of those deals where you pay a certain amount, and you get a certain mount back in vouchers. As you can see, we got $25 to gamble with, $5 to eat... and it only worked with those specific places.

I'm really not into gambling, but I gave it a go... and I won! Thirty bucks! Mags won over forty, and M got about eight. That took about two hours, and by the time the cash out ticket had been printed, we were famished. We didn't know where to go, but we definitely wanted to hit up the Boardwalk.

On our way to the exit, we found Nathan's. It was on the voucher list, so we placed our orders. M and I had to pay a little more out of pocket, but whatever. I got the fish sandwich combo, M got cheese fries.

Sat outside and did some people watching. We ran into some people from our bus and found out one of them won a grand on the slot machines! I wish I had that luck.

Nathan's was right next to a Rain Forest Cafe, a restaurant I haven't seen in a long time. They used to have one in the Palisades Mall, but that was years ago... and was replaced with a Cheesecake Factory. The two times I went to Rain Forest I liked it, and was curious about trying it again... but I guess that'll have to be for next time.

Didn't have to walk too far on the boardwalk before spotting out this sign. They run all along the boardwalk, and look like the Monopoly cards. Mags and I kicked off our shoes, and we decided to walk a bit on the sand. M followed, but I know he wasn't happy about it (how can you not be a beach person?!?). The water was ice cold, and walking underneath the pier... in the shade... on wet sand. My feet were numb.

We finally made it back onto the boardwalk (I totally forgot about those burr things) and decided to walk around off strip. M and I had been talking about picking up some salt water taffy, and hello... just happen to see this.

Along with taffy, they also sold a variety of candies and sea foam fudge. I meant to ask what sea foam fudge is... another thing to do next time.

We bought about a pound of taffy, in all different flavors. I like the peppermint and green apple ones best. M still has the candy, that is, if he didn't finish them already.

No reason behind this, other than I thought it was funny.

If you need plans for MDW, there will be a hot dog eating contest in Atlantic City! It is being held at the Trump Plaza Beach Bar May 29th at 2:00pm. According to the description, AC is one of the stops on the hot dog eating contest tour.

I Want Candy?

Went to the grocery store and candy just happened to be 20 cents a package. So 50 dollars worth was purchased.

Not for me, mind you. It's for my aunt to send back to the Philippines. Which doesn't make sense- it will be shipped by boat, and quite likely in a cargo hold that is not temperature controlled. Those kids in the Philippines will be opening up balikbayan boxes full of melted chocolate.

Candy Tin

Have you ever seen the movie Grave of the Fireflies? If you haven't, I won't spoil the movie but the candy tin plays a big role.

Went to the international market to pick up some forgotten ingredients for the party we had over the weekend. I saw it in the checkout line and had to have it.

Halloween Antics

I've got a pumpkin, but it isn't carved. I'm waiting until I have time to roast it and make it into a pumpkin pie/pumpkin risotto/pumpkin soup/baked pumpkin seeds.

I have a bag full of candy, but no desire to actually eat any of it. I don't have the candy cravings like I used to. I don't dream of trading a candy necklace for gobstoppers. I am thinking of making soup with chicken stock, miso paste, chopped carrots, onions and white radish (those long huge ones that could be mistaken for an arm).

What's my costume? My beloved Steelers jersey, a small yellow towel, and a yellow hard hat. Monday Night Football. No apple cider, but beer. BREWSKI! No candy, but wings, popcorn, pretzels, bar food.

I feel like one of the boys. Only smaller and with a higher voice.
