The Soft Serve Chronicles: Jim’s Tastee Freez (Delmar, NY)

IMG_5700

It’s no secret my love of soft ice cream runs deep. Yes, ice creams of a firmer nature are just as good (if not better) as their more flexible counterparts, but they are like night and day. Hard ice cream is served in dishes, soft serve belongs in edible cones. It’s the nature of the beast.

Not necessarily comfortable ice cream eating weather, but hey… that is what your car is for. Or house. Or an indoor eating establishment. M was down in New Jersey for work and I picked him up when he got back into town. Since we were already in Albany, I figured we'd head down Delaware Avenue and check things out. I was thinking about going to All Good Bakers, but they were already closed (and with their hours, I will probably never get to go).

Instead of turning around I kept driving, and next thing I knew I was in Delmar. And hello! Jim's was open. M thought I was crazy to get one, but it's going to be a while before I head back that way... and who knows if I'm going to want to get another one from there. On a side note, there's a laundry place next door to Jim's - so while the clothes are going through the spin cycle, you can have yourself a sundae.

Saw what I did there?

Got myself a regular vanilla cone with rainbow sprinkles ($3.25). Smaller than the one I got from the Snowman, but tastes just the same. Had some sprinkle fallout, this ice cream seemed to melt quicker than normal.

They serve chili dogs, which I would love to try, if it weren't for this whole no eating meat thing. Alright then, I've found my reason to go back. You have been warned.

A Consequence of Global Warming?

Isn’t it too early for the Shamrock shake? Not that I’m complaining… but still. I love me liquid thin mints. Love. Love. Love.

Oh, The Weather Outside Is Frightful

If you're like me, you're hiding out from the first big snow storm of the season.

If you're not and just happen to live outside of the storm area... lucky you.

I am typing this on my semi new tablet, a Samsung Thrive which I am really liking. Watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 while my dad makes up a big pot of macaroni soup.

Stay off the roads if you can, and watch out for falling branches.

With all this stay in time, maybe I'll finally get around to finishing posts!

Something Warm

IMG_0058

Leftover rotisserie chicken, diced up daikon radish, and kimchee in a chicken broth with udon noodles. It wasn’t hot enough for me, so I readily used chili garlic sauce.

This soup was even simpler – cubed tofu, sweet potato noodles, and kimchee in a chicken broth. And once again I used lots of chili garlic sauce.

Halo-Halo All Over…

IMG_20110112_052351

I don’t know the exact measurements, but I’d like to say we got 10-11 inches of the fluffy white stuff. I woke up quite early (4AM early) to clear the driveway, but one look out the window and the streets weren’t plowed. So instead of shoveling, I watched for the trucks and went back to sleep.

By late morning I had cleared off the driveway, and wouldn’t you know it… nice day. Sun was shining, and snow was starting to melt. I headed back into the house achy, and famished. Thankfully, I had something waiting for me.

Sis made up a batch of pantry soup. Chock full of veggies from the freezer, along with the remaining salad vegetables she bought for her lunches. I cooked up some barley to add to the soup, and a couple cans of black beans.

Oh, and the halo-halo in the title? Snowfalls always make me think of Rex Navarette’s stand up routine. I was trying to find the halo-halo bit on youtube, but nothing. But watch his stuff though. Hilarious.

That Kind of Morning

Cake and coffee are the only way to go. Not looking forward to the snowfall (even if it will be pretty looking).

Baby It’s Cold Outside

IMG_0006

Thankfully this soup will keep me warm.

Nothing special here. Take your favorite vegetable soup recipe, and add noodles and rice. Make it spicy, keep it mild. Drown it in cheese, or keep it lactose free.

Whatever your course of soup action, make sure it’s a tasty one.

Pace Chili Con Carne

2010-12-15-22-25-35-072

A few months ago I received two bottles of Pace picante sauce as part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program. Originally I was going to use the sauce with some chicken or fish dishes, but cold weather thought otherwise.

In Case I Didn’t Say It Before

Big things are in the works for 2011! I won't be going into specifics right now -- I'd like to wait until things become a little more settled -- but will say that shopping for work gear, luggage sets for a destination wedding (not mine), and housewares can be a bit taxing on a girl.

And what about this weather? Between the shopping and shoveling the driveway I hardly have time to cook my next meal.

Okay, that’s not true. I’ve been cooking quite a bit. But I’m still pressed for time. Winter blues, I tell ya…

Our Anniversary Dinner

Wednesday will mark our one year anniversary. At least, we think so. It was around this time definitely, but we agreed that the 7th was close enough. It's been a wonderful year, if you were curious.

Sadly, our anniversary is during the week- I'm downstate when I don't have to work and he's... always working. So we had an early anniversary dinner.

In a "kill two birds with one stone" move, we brought Emma along with us so she could do her business on our way to picking up dinner. Turns out walking over there on a very cold winter night is not the best thing for me- I noticed when I got back to the apartment I had broken out in hives. All over.
At least dinner was good.

Apologies All Around

One of my "must do" things of 2008 was to update this blog more often.

And now we're closing in on February.

I've been distracted, but in a good way. New job, new guy, and there is a third new... I'm sure of it. Hopefully it will be an acceptance letter somewhere. But the year's still young.

On the crafty front: I've punched out two sweater vests and a mini cardigan. Currently working on a sweater dress that screams 80's. And it's Fuschia to boot. So going to rock it if it fits.

On the cooking front: I haven't really been cooking, since I'm not at home as much as I used to be. But come next week this will all change. So, in anticipation... I've decided to tackle The Minimalist's 101 Simple Meals Ready in 10 Minutes or Less.

But yeah... that's about it here. I've been sick the last few days. And my car's in the shop. Sick + stranded = one bored gal.

SDN Meet: January 2007

My friends and I over at the Student Doctor Network have this tradition of meeting up for a weekend in January. The inaugrual meet is what we lovingly call "The Blizzard Meet," and the one following I like to think of as "There's Something About Meera."

This year's meet is over and we are slowing punching out the photos of the events. Normally I am a picture taking loony, but I lacked the motivation to click my way through the night.

Regardless of that, here are pictures I did take.

I actually had to take one down because one of the participants did not want her picture open to the world. I guess she's worried she'll be discovered at her school.

This is what I had for dinner. The place we ended up eating at was pricey, but hey... Kobe Beef Sliders? HELLO!!!!

Bundled Up

I decided to spend a week at my parents house, just to get away from the cold upstate temperatures. And just my luck, the first night I'm home, the heater breaks down. I ended up sleeping by the fireplace, waking up every so often when the fire started to die down.

While it is not as cold here as it is back at my apartment (from what I hear it snowed and was in the low teen's), the most I've done as to venturing out, is to take my sister's dog out for a little play time.

Hazy Shade of Winter

I don’t care what my friends say, but I love that Bangles song. It was in a movie that I believe was called “Less than Zero.” Eighties movie. Gotta love that.
