Food items from different countries for a ticket. How much those tickets were, I don't know - someone just handed me a strip of tickets and told me to go at it. Paella, some Dominican food I forget what, corned beef and rye, and a burger and hot dog. Fun time, ended up having to take lots of pictures for my parents and their friends.

New Shalimar Take Out Restaurant (Nanuet, NY)

Now that I no longer live in the area, my mom likes to let me know about the new restaurants opening up.

“Oh… you have to go to the new Indian restaurant. It’s a grocery store too, but they have a buffet! Your dad went there and got all this food for 6.99! Go buy lunch there today and get another so you have lunch for tomorrow…”

Anniversary Dinner

My parents recently celebrated a wedding anniversary. They’ve been married for over 30 years… impressive, no?

Karavalli Lunch Buffet (Nanuet, NY)

I recently met up with my friend S for a quick lunch. He really can’t go that far, so we’re limited to places in the Nanuet/Pearl River area. I originally wanted to check out the new Indian restaurant on Little Tor Road, but that’s New City and would cut into S’s eating time. He suggested Karavalli, which is just down the road.

I bet reading this makes you think of the Karavalli in Albany. Well guess what… they’re affiliated with one another, as indicated on their take out menus and the website.

The price of Karavalli’s lunch buffet is slightly more expensive than the lunch buffets I’m used to ($9.95 weekday lunch, $13.95 weekend brunch), but I suppose in exchange for a higher price is more variety in their dishes. If you can see in that picture up there, they had a noodle dish. Now I will readily admit I am not very knowledgeable in Indian cuisine, so I can’t say if that vermicelli dish is something you would commonly see. But it was new to me, so I tried it. Not bad, although it reminded me of Singapore noodles.

I wasn’t as hungry as I normally am when it comes to buffet, and only got up for more food two more times, just to try a little here and there. I hardly touched the naan, and what little I ate was tasteless and greasy.

 

I saved enough room for dessert. They had two offerings- milk dumplings and kheer. The kheer was okay, but it is pretty much rice pudding. The milk dumplings I’ve never seen before and I thought they were too sweet.

So far I haven’t found an Indian restaurant in Rockland County that appeals to me. It’s a shame, since I really do like Indian food. I think I’ll have to check out the new place over in New City. It’s in the space that used to be a Mexican restaurant. And just like the restaurant that preceded it, I have a feeling it’s not going to last.

Five Guys...Again

I went back to Five Guys. I pretty much had to after all these guys told me I got the sissy burger. Friday was the perfect day too- absolutely everything that could go wrong did and by the time I drove off campus, the only thing that would calm me down was a burger. A double.

And here it is. The double. Double doozy. With cheese. And ketchup, pickles, and grilled onions. It is the onions which explains why it was glistening. It was a good glisten. A tasty glisten.

No joke, I killed that burger in three minutes. I took some breaks here and there to not look like a slob, but I inhaled that thing.

These potatoes were from Idaho. They came right out of the fryer, and I happily ate them with malt vinegar. I see where you vinegar on fries lovers are coming from... it was pretty good. I really didn't need to order a large, but since I ordered the double doozy, I figured I'd go all the way. I ended up eating about half of the cup and bringing the rest home. They aren't bad reheated, btw.

Not that it's much to get excited over, but I love the fry spillage. It's a nice surprise.

Not feeling the greasy bag look though.

The Nanuet Restaurant (Nanuet, NY)

 

As a thank you for taking my cousin to the DMV this afternoon, my uncle treated us to dinner at the Nanuet Restaurant. Interestingly enough, the town of Nanuet is home to three of the better known pizza places in the area, all on the same road (Middletown Road to be precise).

The pictures are a bit dark, but you can see that the decor is nothing more than cluttered walls and formica tables. The restaurant has been around for about 50 years, and it shows. Behind the bar is a wall of hats that appeared to have been signed. I am unaware of their significance at this time, so finding out would be a good reason to go back. The dining area is one big open room with a partition separating the bar from the rest of the room.

 

 

We ordered the Pizzafest special, which is a large pizza, family sized salad, and garlic bread. The bread and the salad came out together, and that was about twenty minutes after we had sat down. With most of these pizza places (Nanuet Restaurant, Nanuet Hotel, Kinchleys) you're going to be waiting as the food slowly comes out. My uncle and cousin ate most of the garlic bread, and both agreed it was good. The small piece I was able to rip off before they finished, was warm, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It had just the right amount of butter and garlic.

The salad at first seemed to be on the small side, but looking back it was probably the right size. It was mostly iceberg lettuce with a handful of thickly cut onion rings, a few tomato wedges, and two (that's right TWO) slices of green bell pepper. I shouldn't even call it a slice- it was a big chunk. This salad was poorly made, and I hope this is not how it normally is.

The highlight, of course, was the pizza. The large pizza is an eight cut, we were able to finish two slices each. It looks like it's not alot, but it is filling. We added pepperoni and meatballs to ours, and it is good to see that they do not skimp on the toppings. My personal preference is that meatballs should be crumbled on top of a pizza, and not sliced and thrown on there. That just shows laziness. I tried a bit of the meat apart from the pizza and was dismayed when I discovered the meat had zero flavor.

The taste of the pizza, I'm sorry to say, reminded me of the frozen stuff I'll buy from time to time. It's the crust. Unlike the doughy crust of Red Front, Nanuet Restaurant pizza has a flaky crust. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying it reminds me of frozen pizza. My uncle and cousin liked it and were already talking about visiting again. I'll give it another shot, but I may just order pasta.

Dinner for three (including two sodas) came out to $30.00 with tip.
